A workshop 'Crossing Linguistic Borders: a participatory workshop with Third and Native language community radio broadcasters' organised by PI5 Peter Lewis, with the help of Gretchen King of CKUT-FM McGill University, took place at a pre-conference event before the start of the 2015 annual conference, July 12-15, of the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR- AIERI). A public event, the day’s programme, titled 3rd & Indigenous Language Communities on Air – A gathering of community broadcasters was organised by the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (known by its French acronym AMARC) which invited many IAMCR participants to join Canadian community media broadcasters, advocates, funders, and researchers in an exchange of experiences in multilingual broadcasting and community media initiatives. Around twenty participants shared their stories of coming to radio and using it to reach their own and other linguistic communities, discussed the obstacles and the opportunities faced in different national contexts, including Australia, Haiti, South Korea, Taiwan and Canada’s urban and First Nation communities.
